Birmingham Childline marathon team triumph in Paris

Two marathon runners from the NSPCC’s Childline team have raised almost £2,000 to support children by taking part in the Paris Marathon.

Molly Owen and Matt Brookes, from the Childline base in Birmingham, were among 56,950 runners from all over the world that ran 26.2 miles to complete the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris on Sunday, April 13.

Molly and Matt know the difference that Childline can make to young lives, as they are both members of the service’s Birmingham team that delivered over 13,900 counselling sessions to children and young people last year.

Molly, 28, said: “Running the Paris Marathon has been such an incredible experience for me and one that has exceeded my expectations as I have enjoyed every minute of it.

“Pairing up with Matt has been great, and this whole journey has enabled me to feel even closer with our brilliant team in Birmingham. I feel proud to have been able to challenge myself, and to succeed in something for a charity that I love.”

Matt, 38, said: “The Paris Marathon certainly has been a challenge of a lifetime for me, and I would like to give my thanks to everyone who supported us and helped to make this happen.

“Please support us if you haven’t already, you really can help make a difference for vulnerable children living in Birmingham and across the West Midlands.”

With their combined fundraising, Molly and Matt are currently totalling £1,870 for the NSPCC and Childline.

Molly finished in 6hrs 9 min, and Matt completed the course in 5hrs 52 mins, with their combined fundraising currently totalling £1,870.

Amanda Synnott, the NSPCC Community Fundraising Manager for the West Midlands, said: “Bon travail Matt and Molly, we are all really proud of you here at the NSPCC’s Birmingham office. Not only are they both amazing marathon runners but they have gone above and beyond to support the Childline service.

“Every £4 raised could help Childline answer a call from a child who needs support. The money raised will help the charity run the essential helpline service so that is available for children in need of help at any time during the year.”
