Town centre monument in Eastwood

This monument stood in Eastwood’s Market Place at the junction of Derby Road and Mansfield Road.

This monument was a feature of Eastwood town centre

It was erected in 1896 in memory of Edward Lindley, the first chairman of Eastwood Town Council.

Mr Lindley joined Barber Walker and Co, the owners of the colliery, as an office boy at 17. He quickly progressed in the company and was the general manager by September 1891.

Eastwood Market Place was the site of the popular Friday night market with the stalls lit by paraffin lamps and ‘Mad Harry’ selling his assorted goods.

The memorial was later incorporated into the cadets’ cross memorial at the corner of Edward Road and Nottingham Road.

The statutes fair was held in early November on the nearby Sun Inn croft when labourers and journeymen could be hired for a period of 11 months. Hiring them for short periods meant they were not the responsibility of the parish
