Victorian home demolished to make way for petrol station

This photo was taken on August 1, 1994 and shows a Victorian house in Greens Lane, Kimberley.

The house fenced off in Greens Lane

It was originally owned by Mr Green, a builder and joiner who built the town’s war memorial in 1921.

When Mr Green lived in the property the road was called Factory Lane. It was re-named Greens Lane after Victoria Mills factory closed down.

Two days after this photo was taken the property was knocked down to make way for Sainsbury’s petrol station.

Because it was near a school with many pupils suffering asthma and there would be more traffic pollution, Kimberley Town Council joined many residents to oppose the scheme.

A group was set up called Kimberley Against Petrol Station (KAPS). Nevertheless the petrol station was built.
