Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney said “brilliant” James Carragher can be a “very good” player

The Wigan Athletic manager Shaun Maloney said his “brilliant” young defender James Carragher has a chance of being a “very good” player at the club.

Carragher scored his first professional goal in Latics’ 2-0 home win over Bristol Rovers last month with a header from a free-kick from Joseph Hungbo.

He also played 90 minutes in the Tics’ narrow 2-1 defeat at home to Premier League Fulham in the FA Cup fourth round on Saturday.

Maloney said: “From a defensive point of view in particular against Fulham he was very good. He’s got a brilliant attribute of really sensing danger.

“I’ve been really happy with him in the last week. I think there’s still lots more to come from Carra.

“He needs to keep pushing because he’s keeping out Will Aimson at the moment who has been excellent for us.”

Carragher has started the last four for Wigan as the right-sided centre-back alongside Jason Kerr.

Maloney added: “He just needs to trust his own ability a little bit more with the ball. When that comes - and I think it will come - then he has got a chance of being a very good player for us.”

On August 10, 2021, Carragher made his professional debut for Wigan in a penalty shoot-out victory at Hull City in the League Cup with the scoreline at 1-1 after regulation time.

After four and five-month loans to Oldham Athletic and Inverness Caledonian Thistle respectively, he has cemented his place in the first-team squad this term.
