Abbey Leisure Centre extends opening hours for Ramadan

A local leisure centre in Barking will keep its doors open until 1am during Ramadan, offering Muslim residents the opportunity to exercise after their evening prayers and meals.

Abbey Leisure Centre, which is managed by Everyone Active in partnership with the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, announced the extended hours will run from February 28 to March 30, giving members access to both the main and female-only gyms, as well as spa facilities, during the Islamic holy month.

"I believe this is a fantastic decision that reflects Everyone Active's commitment to inclusivity and supporting the diverse needs of our members," said Nazia Mahmood, the centre's Finance & Admin Manager.

"Our gym is proud to support the community during Ramadan by offering extended hours, ensuring that everyone can maintain their fitness routine while observing this sacred month.

“We recognise the importance of balancing spiritual commitments with personal wellbeing, and this flexibility allows members to work out after Iftar or before Suhoor in a way that suits their schedule.

"By creating an inclusive and accommodating environment, this initiative fosters a sense of unity, health, and wellbeing during this special time. Ramadan is a period of reflection, togetherness, and self-improvement, and I truly appreciate Everyone Active's dedication to supporting members on their journey, both physically and spiritually."

The decision comes in response to this year's earlier sunset times during Ramadan.

"With shorter daylight hours this year, people will break their fast earlier in the day," explained Hasan Romel, Area Contract Manager for Everyone Active. "The response has already been enthusiastic, with both customers and staff excited about the initiative. If well-utilised, we hope to continue this arrangement in future years."

Councillor Saima Ashraf, Deputy Leader of the Council and Cabinet Member for Community Leadership and Engagement, added, "This initiative is a wonderful example of how our community can come together to support one another. By extending the leisure centre's hours during Ramadan, we are ensuring that all residents have the opportunity to stay active and healthy, regardless of their religious commitments. It's a testament to our borough's dedication to inclusivity and wellbeing."

Located in one of London's most diverse boroughs, the centre has made significant strides in improving accessibility. Since opening its women-only gym space in 2022, the centre has seen a significant increase in female memberships. The dedicated facility is equipped with the same high-quality equipment as the main gym, ensuring all members have equal opportunities to maintain their fitness and health.

A £500,000 renovation of the main gym area was also recently completed, introducing new equipment for all members. The facility features comprehensive exercise equipment including treadmills, cross-trainers, and weight training machines.

The extended Ramadan hours will apply to the main gym, women-only gym and spa facilities within the centre.
