Why People Use AI For Cover Letters
AI can help job seekers find the right words. It makes writing more professional and can match the tone of a job description.
According to a 2024 survey by CV-Library, over 35% of UK job seekers have used AI tools to help write their applications. People who struggle with writing in English also find it helpful for improving grammar and structure.
The Risks of Using AI For Job Applications
But there are downsides. Employers are starting to notice when cover letters sound too robotic or generic. They want to see real personality and motivation. Some hiring managers even use AI-detection tools.
A survey by IBM found that 42% of recruiters said they could tell when AI was used—and it made them less likely to consider the candidate.
Missing the Personal Touch
Recruitment expert, Sivan Joss, of finance recruitment firm Joss Search explains: “The key is to use ChatGPT and similar tools to enhance your CV and cover letter—not to write them on your behalf,” says Joss.
“If the language used by ChatGPT doesn’t reflect how you speak or describe yourself in interviews, it will come across as inauthentic. Interviewers can spot it, and it may work against you.”
“AI can also overstate your achievements, making them sound more impressive than they actually are. Always verify the content before submitting your application. Inaccuracies or failed background checks can cost you the job.”
Finding the Right Balance
“Recruiters can spot AI-generated text. If your CV feels robotic, it may lose impact. ChatGPT can help, but overuse leads to bland, generic content. Employers want to see your personality, not just polished words.”
“AI is great for catching grammar errors, typos, and clunky phrasing. Use ChatGPT to review your CV for clarity and flow. Just remember to keep edits true to your tone and experience. Let AI refine your words—not define them.”
She concludes: “Your CV should sound like you—confident, capable, and honest. By using AI wisely, candidates can create applications that are clear, compelling and above all, authentic”
