Pam Nisevich-Bede, global nutritionist and sports dietitian at Abbott's Lingo business is here to share the strategies needed to fuel success and help runners cross the finish line in Kipchoge style.
- The Real Work Starts Before the Race: Before runners even reach the starting line, they need a solid fuelling strategy, something I’ve emphasised in my career as a sports nutritionist. Days before the marathon, I advise athletes to begin their carbohydrate loading, making sure their energy reserves are fully stocked, much like preparing for a long road trip without frequent fuel stops.
- Harnessing CGM Technology: Using a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) such as Lingo can been transformative. For example, CGM data can be used to adjust carbohydrate intake in real-time during the race, significantly reducing the risk of hitting the wall. The technology allows for seamless modifications to how athletes manage their energy intake during the race, enhancing performance by providing personal glucose insights that help keep energy levels steady throughout the event.
- Getting Through the Race: A key moment in any marathon is between miles 18 and 23. Many runners, including those I’ve coached, experience low glycogen levels here. I always emphasise planning fuel stops and using personalised reminders to stay on schedule, to avoid energy crashes.
- Recovery Tips: Effective post-race recovery involves three crucial steps. First, restoration is key - consume 15 to 30 grams of protein within an hour of completing the marathon, with a protein shake being an excellent choice to cover all bases. Second, refuel your energy reserves by replenishing carbohydrates to restore glycogen levels. Third, ensure proper rehydration to replace lost fluids and electrolytes. Additionally, after a marathon, begin with light activities like stretching or yoga to allow for recovery. Most athletes can return to normal routines within a few weeks.
Pam is wishing all runners a successful race this weekend and encourages people to check out Lingo by Abbott for a window into their body.
