A runner’s first race sticks with them, not only the race but the build-up, the training, the nerves, the relief – all of it. It will be a steep learning curve but if you prepare properly, you’ll be on track to create an unforgettable memory.
Create, or use, a clear personalised training plan. This will help you prepare both your body and your mind for the challenge ahead.
Win the water station game. That might sound silly but clever tactics here can be game-changing, avoid the first few drink volunteers as they will be busiest instead aiming for those at the far end of the station. As soon as you’re done, head to the other side of the track to prevent having to run through used cups and bunched up runners.
Pack energy gels. That boost of sugar and caffeine at critical points in your race will be crucial, do not forget to leave the door without them.
It may be an awkward subject, but it is a necessary one. Veggies increase your need for the loo and the last thing you want is for this to impact your race day prep, or even worse, the race itself. Reduce the number of vegetables you’re eating in the days leading up to the big day to avoid this fate.
It’s obviously important to have the right gear, but it’s just as important to practice in that gear first. We all love the excitement of flashy new shoes or your brilliant new hydration pack but be sure to trial these out first to avoid any issues.
Prepare your body. You can have all the top gear, but if your body isn’t ready, none of it will matter. Trim your toenails to avoid bleeding, protect those nipples and lube up sensitive skin, unsurprisingly, chafing mid-race is not something you want.
Be sociable. Yes, it’s a race and many people are there to set a personal best, but chatting to your fellow runners is often beneficial for both you and them. A good chat can help calm the nerves and take your mind off the start. Many are also running for charity, or loved ones, and might inspire you, or want some support themselves, ahead of the race.
If you’re going to listen to headphones, be sure to prep your playlist. Motivational pushes from your favourite songs at key points could push you through the wall. Make sure to unplug for the final stretch as you run through the crowds and take in the incredible finish line atmosphere in the electric Hackney Moves festival.
Don’t get tricked by adrenaline. Remember your game plan and stick to it, don’t let the thrill of the start make you set off at an unsustainable pace, it will only come back to haunt you.
Strongly consider taking the next day off work. For your first time, your body will ache, there’s no getting around it. A relaxing day off and a good recovery plan over the following days will have you back to your best in no time.
