Goalball UK is the national governing body for the Paralympic sport of goalball. Its aim is to increase the accessibility and awareness of the indoor, fast paced, three-a-side team sport, in which players score goals by throwing the ball (which has internal bells in to make a noise) past the opposition. Open to blind, partially and fully-sighted players (all players wear blackout eye shades), it has been played across the world ever since it was created in 1946 to help rehabilitate soldiers who lost their sight in the Second World War.
The aim of the collaboration between Sports Insure and Goalball UK is to drive growth among participants, support the sustainability of the sport, and help break down boundaries to give people who are blind or partially sighted more equal opportunities to undertake physical exercise.
Dawn Luby, client management director at Sports Insure said:
“Our vast experience of working with national governing bodies, sports players, athletes, coaches, team owners, and sports leagues, has provided Sport Insure with a front row seat to the many benefits that come with participating in sport.
“When the opportunity arose to support Goalball UK and help it reach more of the two million people in the UK with total or partial sight and provide them with more opportunities to participate in sport, we were keen to get involved. Through the collaboration we’re aiming to help raise awareness and see more people play and watch the sport.”
Mark Winder, CEO at Goalball UK said:
“Goalball UK is incredibly grateful for this sponsorship from Sports Insure. Its support is invaluable in helping us provide opportunities for blind and partially-sighted people to participate in our sport. Sport Insure’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement aligns perfectly with our values, and we thank them for their partnership in empowering our athletes."
