Helen Bach Northants Nosh: Sunday lunch at The Hatton Arms, Gretton

You can't beat a good pub Sunday lunch - that's why I'm choosing this as my first 'Northants Nosh' column.

The Hatton Arms in Gretton on the Northants/Rutland border dates back to the 14th century, and is the second oldest in the county.

When you picture a village pub, this is exactly what springs to mind - oak beams, fireplace, cosy bar and lounge; all this and a separate dining room boasting fabulous views over the Welland Valley.

The Sunday lunches are a firm favourite, offering great food and value for money.  You can have a main course on its own for £16.95, two courses are £19.95 and three courses cost £22.95.

I plumped for two courses, and chose deep fried brie wedges with cranberry sauce for my starter.  The brie came in generous portions, and gently oozed cheesy deliciousness when sliced into, perfectly complemented by the sharpness of the cranberry.

For my main course, I chose the roast beef, which was served medium rare, just the way I like it.  This was accompanied by a magnificent Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, a selection of seasonal vegetables, a glorious cauliflower cheese croquette - a house speciality, shaped like a little 'flying saucer' - and a personal pot of horseradish sauce.

The menu changes weekly, but there are usually beef, chicken, pork or vegetarian options with suitable accompaniments.  Starters on the day I visited included leek and potato soup, black pudding fritters and a ham hock terrine.  Sadly I was too full for dessert, but options included cheesecake, sticky toffee pudding and a selection of ice creams.

Parking is available in the car park behind the pub, and there is wheelchair access into the restaurant.

There is a good wine list with offerings for all tastes, plus a 'wine of the month' specials board.  I selected the Finger Post New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc which is just what a Savvy B should be - zingy, citrusy and fresh.  (Yes, I know people normally have red wine with beef, but I like my Savvy B!)

Beers/lagers/stouts on tap include Marston's Pedigree, Grainstore Osprey, Kronenbourg 1664, Estrella Dam and Guinness.

The pub also does specials - curry night is every other month, with two courses for £15; Steak Nights on Thursdays, with two steaks for £25; and Friday lunchtime Fish and Chips, with two for £16.
