Sutton-in-Ashfield Rambling Club: Penistone Walk Sunday 30th March

This ramble explores delightful countryside around the Don and Little Don valleys to the north west of Sheffield. it will be a linear route of approximately 11 miles There will be a wide variety of scenery and spectacular views. We will use well established tracks and footpaths with a few short sections of country lanes. There is usually a shorter walk option. New members always most welcome.

Millhouse Green & the Don Valley.

The walk will start at the Underbank Reservoir near Stocksbridge. After following the reservoir for a short distance we begin a long gradual climb above Knoll Brook. This pretty wooded hillside brings us to the edge of Whitwell Moor with more panoramic views. Near Salt Springs Farm we turn west, high above the Ewden valley, and head onto Barnside Moor.

We then pass Ewden Height along a moorland track towards Shaw Clough before turning north on to Gilroyd Lane. Then continuing past the Midhope Reservoir and into the pretty hamlet of Upper Midhope. From here we descend past Langsett Reservoir into our lunchtime destination Langsett village. There are a pub, cafe and toilets available here.

After this break we head east and join the trackbed of an old disused railway line used in the construction of the reservoir, We then turn north along Ochre Dike and past Nether House to Hartcliffe Hill There is the option to climb the hill or use the footpath around the base to meet up to our final break point at Hartcliffe Brow.
