Local author Matt Graydon to speak at Dorking Library

Dorking Library is set to welcome local author Matt Graydon for an exclusive talk about his historical novel, Leaving Fatherland. Leaving Fatherland tells the story of Oskar, a book-loving protagonist who endures an abusive childhood in Nazi Germany before being drawn into the Luftwaffe during the Second World War. As Oskar navigates the war, a failed marriage, and forty years of personal research, he embarks on a deeply personal quest to understand why his father mistreated him. The novel presents a complex tapestry of characters from both sides of the conflict, challenging perceptions of history and the lasting impact of parental influence.

Graydon’s inspiration for the novel comes from his own family history. His German uncle’s wartime experience—including a dramatic plane crash in the North African desert—became a long-standing family mystery that the author thoroughly researched. The result is a novel that blends real-life experiences with meticulous historical research, making it a must-read for history enthusiasts and fiction lovers alike.

With a background in journalism, Matt Graydon brings a well-honed storytelling craft to his writing. His career has taken him across the globe, engaging with people from diverse cultures, and in recent years, he has returned to his passion for creative writing. He is an active member of the UK’s Society of Authors and the Phoenix Writing Group in Dorking.

This event is an unmissable opportunity for literature and history lovers to gain insight into the writing process and the real-life stories behind Leaving Fatherland. Attendees will have the chance to purchase copies of the book on the day, and free refreshments will be provided.
