Chiddingfold pub to reopen in June following £650,000 upgrade and four-year closure

Closed since 2021, The Winterton Arms on Petworth Road in Chiddingfold is to reopen in early June following a major £650,000 upgrade by Heineken owned, Star Pubs1 and the pub’s new licensee Adam Hayward. Building work starts on Monday 14th April to bring this much-loved pub back to life, with 20 jobs created on the back of the investment.

The Winterton Arms post refurbishment

In need of some TLC, The Winterton Arms is undergoing a full top-to-toe revamp which will see it reopen as a friendly top quality local with the best pub garden in the area. It will offer gastro quality food and host regular events for the community.

Adam Hayward comes with a wealth of hospitality experience. Having started bottle washing at 14, he was a general manager of a pub group aged 20.There followed senior positions in the UK and abroad working for the Argentinian steak restaurant Gaucho before opening his own Notting Hill restaurant. He since realised his passion lay in pubs and decided to create the quintessential great British pub at The Winterton Arms.

The layout of The Winterton Arms will include a large bar area and two dining rooms. The bar has two open fires and will be configured to provide ample space for drinking either standing beside the bar or seated at traditional wooden tables and cosy leather fireside armchairs.Soft lighting with artwork and photos will add character and create a warm and welcoming ambience.

The dining rooms, which each seat 30, will have their own distinct characters – one with an open fire, flagstones and dark walls offering a cosy, intimate and moody atmosphere, and the other a more light and airy feel with slate tiles, abundant greenery and windows providing lots of natural light. Both rooms will be available to hire for functions. The garden room can be used for canape style standing events or a private dinner or lunch for up to 20.

Funds are also being spent upgrading the toilets in keeping with the comfortable smarter look and feel of the pub.

Outside, the pub is being redecorated in green with new signage and lighting added. The carpark is being overhauled and the garden transformed into a versatile space for all to use. There will be a partially covered dining terrace with fire-pit for alfresco eating and drinking, an adults-only section of the garden and a family space with a dedicated fenced off children’s activity area. Child friendly events and activities will be planned throughout the warmer months.

A full a la carte menu will be available from 11 - 9pm Monday to Thursday as well as a brunch menu, and till 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays. On Fridays and Saturdays the pub will also open from 7am for breakfast. And on Sunday the traditional roast menu will be available until 8pm.

Dishes at The Winterton Arms will be made from locally sourced ingredients where possible.Traditional pub favourites like, fish and chips, burgers and old-fashioned puds, like Pavlova and Spotted Dick, will feature alongside more innovative options from around the world, such as Shrimp Chicharron – shrimp in saffron mayo with pickled jalapenos – and a Shrimp and Crayfish Burger with avocado and sriracha mayo.

The drinks selection will include a line-up of outstanding local ales, an excellent draught selection, a wide range of spirits, new and old-world wines ranging from the reasonably priced to fine and rare wines for special occasions. There will also be cocktails – exceptionally well-made classics (Adam at one time worked with the world’s bartender of the decade winner) and new creations, mocktails and a wonderful range of soft drinks and plenty of low and no-alcohol options.

Staples like a draught ale, a draught lager, house wines, water and bread are priced to offer exceptional value for money.

Adam’s plan for The Winterton Arms is for it to become a hub for entertainment and events. In addition to live music, quiz nights and seasonal celebrations there will be activities like wine tastings, food and drinks pairing evenings, mother’s yoga classes and one-off occasions like a doggy pool party in the garden.

Adam says: “I am very keen that regulars have a say on what activities, like interactive movie nights, the pub should host. I would also love The Winterton Arms to become somewhere that community teams and groups choose to meet regularly, and we will accommodate their individual needs.”

“When I saw The Winterton Arms, I realised it had real potential. There is a lot of space in which to expand. My plan in time is to create a games room with a couple of oches and a pool table. I have lots of other ideas ranging from a flower shop, dog grooming parlour to wedding venue. However, I think it is important to take time to get to know customers and to find out what they would like the pub to offer. I am excited to be injecting new life into The Winterton Arms and to sharing some of the exciting tastes I have been exposed to when working abroad.

Ron Barnes, Star Pubs Business Development Manager said: “We’re delighted that an operator of Adam’s calibre has taken on The Winterton Arms. He is very experienced, has a clear vision and a great track record of creating and running successful hospitality venues.

“He is full of ideas and passionate about pubs, which together will ensure The Winterton Arms is a great place to socialise with family and friends.”
