The investment in The Apple Tree, located on the corner of Wey Hill and Lion Road, is being carried out by Heineken-owned Star Pubs to create a quality family and dog friendly local with décor more in keeping with its attractive village green location.
The new décor will transform the inside of The Apple Tree, making it brighter and more comfortable and welcoming whilst enhancing its traditional character. Seating booths are to be replaced by larger tables and chairs creating better spaces for larger groups to socialise in.
The redecoration will include an eclectic mix of seating for around 100, new soft furnishings, carpets, and lighting. Bric-a-brac about the local area will add interest and character. The investment will also upgrade the toilets, which include an accessible toilet.
The pool table, darts board and TVs showing live sport are being retained along with cards and scrabble.
The external makeover will include repainting the pub a fresh white and apple green with new signage and lighting added. The garden will also benefit from investment with a mix of new circular and square picnic tables seating 150. Festoon lighting is being installed to create atmosphere. A new paved terrace will make the garden accessible to wheelchair users and families with prams for the first time.
The Apple Tree will focus on offering an extensive drinks selection for every time of day, ranging from craft beer, cask ale and cocktails to soft drinks. A new coffee machine is also being installed to enable the pub to serve fresh coffee.
The changes will see publicanSue McGovern run The Apple Tree on behalf of Star Pubs and provide continuity of management for regulars. She has been running the pub on a temporary agreement for the last 18 months during which time she’s broadened the pub’s appeal including attracting more women.
Sue said of the refurbishment “I was new to the area 18 months ago but have made a lot of friends locally. For those who were worried about the changes to The Apple Tree, fear not. The pub will offer the same elements such as pool, live sports, darts and a monthly quiz but in better surroundings. There will also be an improved drinks range. The new open layout will enhance the social feel of The Apple Tree. I am looking forward to the pub having a makeover, providing a better experience for all and to showing the summer sports events.”
Comments Ron Barnes, Star Pubs Business Development Manager: “We’re delighted to be investing in The Apple Tree taking it to the next level. Sue has made great inroads attracting a new clientele to the pub, and the improved look and feel of The Apple Tree will I believe broaden its appeal further and delight current regulars. It’s in a great location that deserves a lovely looking pub.”
