The students, aged between 6 and 18, have been tirelessly rehearsing in preparation for the big show. The devised sci-fi musical entitled ‘The Next Big Thing’ was created and written by the Stagecoach Leatherhead and Bookham team, Principal Felicity Corbould-Dawe and Teacher Lucy Carruthers.
The show is based in a future universe where many inhabited planets co-exist peacefully together but aren’t allowed to fraternise with each other. Every ten years the children must make a choice about the path their lives will take to keep harmony between the worlds, even if it means leaving behind loved ones and not following their dreams. But what happens if someone decides to break the status quo?
The fifth [GP1] show of it’s kind, the Big Gala Show wowed the full theatre on Sunday with exceptional performances from all age groups. All expertly accompanied by a professional full live West End band whose other credits include Footloose, Moulin Rouge and The Devil Wears Prada.
With some students taking on multiple roles and others performing solo songs and dances, ‘The Next Big Thing’ really leant into its title and Phoebe, who played a Decider in the show, agrees
‘The shows were the best fun I think I’ve ever had. The choreography was absolutely incredible, the scenes hilarious and the singing was beautiful. I don’t think anyone can say that they did not smile and laugh. Everyone gave 100% effort and that made all the difference. All the teachers are so supportive and caring towards all the students and made us confident to go out there and perform to the best of our ability. I cannot wait for the next show!!!’
Producing this herculean production has been no mean feat but Principal Felicity kept everyone on course and thoroughly enthused.
‘Producing ‘The Next Big Thing’ was nothing short of magical. Watching nearly 200 students, ages 6 to 18, sing, dance, and act their hearts out to bring this show to life was life-changing. From the original script by Lucy Carruthers to the West End band led by Nathan Dawe, this production was a pure theatrical extravaganza. But what truly touched my heart was seeing their faces light up with joy on stage, surrounded by a supportive and loving family audience. It’s a feeling every child should have the chance to experience and a memory that will stay with them and me for a lifetime. I am proud of every single student who took part and can't wait to continue this incredible journey with our Stagecoach family.’
With every gala show aiming to go bigger and better than the last it’s hard to see how Felicity and the team will top this production!
