Rodmell & Southease Parish Pump

It’s the time for bills to be rolling in and money to be rolling out. No wonder people are a little glum at the moment as they wait to hear what the budget will bring.

St Peter's Rodmell Nestled in the South Downs

I’ve just paid for the sweep, tree surgery, car insurance, house insurance, with car tax and MOT in Feb to come, plus Green Flag, so the bank account is a bit lean at the moment, as I’m sure are many others. Thank goodness my parents taught me about financial planning at an early age!

Many people of my age find it difficult to barter about bills, but I always do, although with all the paperwork it’s not easy these days, but it does save you money if you persevere so give it a try.

I have for years supported Dignity in Dying and am so pleased that more and more people are in favour of it. It’s a delicate subject I know but I do wonder if the people that oppose the idea have had their pets put down because they were in such pain.

In many cases the animals that I have had over the years, had the injection which puts them to sleep in dignity and out of pain, but it seems humans don’t have that right with their own bodies. My father wanted it to be his choice as he had Parkinsons Disease and Alzheimer’s, my mother as a Christian, kept screaming almost 24 hours a day with paranoic dementia asking God to take her, whilst my partner (of 54 years) Michael, kept asking me to take a loaded revolver into his nursing home so he could do the job himself.

These things are really hard to come to terms with when you are a carer for years to these people. Mike said he hated me in the end for not doing as he asked me to. I hope other readers don’t have to face such issues.

On a more cheerful note, I went to yet another Leaky Buckets concert with Ali, one of my goddaughters on Friday night, at Iford Village Hall. It was not so highly attended as usual, perhaps because of the road signs which may have put people off, but we all had a great time dancing talking and laughing, and at the same time supporting the Children’s Hospice Care at Chestnut Tree House.

I woke up this morning feeling a little stiff after dancing for several hours. I may not be able to walk so well these days, but I can still jiggle and wiggle on one spot! Just two of us from Rodmell and a lady from Kingston who nearly always supports these evenings which are such good fun for all ages. Well done John and supporting musicians.

We have the farming talk by Ian Everest coming up on November 8 and I suspect most tickets will have gone by now as it’s always so popular.

It’s the shooting season along the valley now, but I haven’t seen any pheasants dead on the road, or running about on the verges which is unusual, these lovely but dizzy birds are usually everywhere at this time.

Villagers may be pleased to see that at last Oli was able to cut the various hedges and trees etc. surrounding my property, so it is now easier to see along the pavement. There is still more tree work to be done – better save up!

Maureen Ford has phoned and told me there is another quiz coming up in our pub to support St Peter and St James Hospice in November – more details on this soon. And don’t forget the pub is having a regular monthly quiz the next one being on November 6 – 8pm, £2 per person teams up to 6. Booking is advised so give the pub a ring 01273 472416

The pub had a children’s Hallowe'en Party on Saturday morning, and I suspect there were some excited children wending their way there for this occasion. Hopefully the parents enjoyed it too! The staff and Chris and Daisy work very hard to set up these things and do so much for the village.

Thank goodness the Sussex Express did a piece on noisy cars making people’s lives a misery. I have written about this in the past as many use the C7 and the villages as a racetrack night and day and nothing appears to have been done about it – probably because we are as they say ‘out in the sticks’ so we don’t matter, but now Lewes is having the same problem something may be done about it as it is illegal I believe. One car was tearing around Tescos car park around 3pm on Saturday, October 26 annoying people so it’s probably on camera somewhere there.

Linda Lamont of Lewes (Let’s Talk – Building Plan) certainly expressed what many people are feeling about the glass door in the listed building making front page news in the Sussex Express whilst Lewes is having to lose its bus station and gain more buildings which aren’t needed (unless of course it’s affordable housing). Well done Linda on putting forward the opinions of many who love Lewes.

It was sad to see that Paul Mellor’s mum Joan Mellor died at the great age of 106 on October 16. She was a lovely lady whom I used to take out when I had a small business as a chauffeur guide some years ago. We used to have great fun together. Her funeral is to be held at St. Peter’s church Rodmell on November 4. Enquiries to Grace Funeral Directors Ringmer. Condolences to the family on their loss.
