Crawley father running 186 miles in six days in memory of son who died suddenly aged two

A father from Crawley, West Sussex is taking on an extraordinary physical and emotional challenge: running six ultramarathons in six days — a total of 186 miles — to raise money for children’s charities in memory of his son, Oliver.

Oliver Dowling

Rob Dowling, co-founder of Oliver’s Wish Foundation, begins the challenge at the London Marathon on Sunday 27th April and will run the equivalent of more than a marathon a day until Friday 2nd May. He is joined on the journey by close friend Simon Pilkington.

Oliver tragically died in his sleep in 2015 at just two years old. Since then, Rob and his wife have dedicated themselves to creating a legacy in his name, supporting a number of children's charities through the foundation they created in his memory. The Chestnut Tree House Children's Hospice in West Sussex has been a major beneficiary of the foundation, alongside SUDC UK (Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood was the heartbreaking diagnosis Rob and Anna received when Oliver passed away).

“This is by far the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” Rob said. “But every step is for Oliver. His life was so short, but his impact continues through the work we do. We want to help other children and families who are facing incredibly difficult times.”

The challenge, known as the 6in6, will see the pair run through a series of grueling routes, including steep elevation and difficult terrain — pushing their bodies to the limit, physically and mentally.

Rob and Simon met through work and bonded over a shared love of running. The two have trained extensively together, with Simon inspired by Rob’s resilience and the strength he’s shown in channeling his grief into something that gives back.

“Watching Rob run with Oliver in his heart is humbling,” said Simon. “This challenge is about more than miles — it’s about memory, love, and helping children who need support.”

The Oliver’s Wish Foundation has raised over £600,000 to date and continues to support children’s hospices, bereavement support organisations, and early childhood education charities. The funds from the 6in6 challenge will go toward continuing this vital work.

“We know the cost-of-living crisis has made it harder for people to donate,” Rob said, “but we’re hoping this challenge captures hearts and reminds people what we can achieve when we come together.”
