BattleKart Gateshead celebrates successful launch of augmented reality go-karting experience

BattleKart Gateshead, the innovative augmented reality go-karting experience, is celebrating a successful first three-months since opening with rave reviews from customers and strong engagement from the local community.

Located in the heart of Gateshead opposite the Metrocentre, the venue has quickly become a popular destination for families, friends, and thrill-seekers looking to experience a new form of racing entertainment.

Since its grand opening, BattleKart Gateshead has redefined traditional go-karting by combining real, electric karts with immersive augmented reality technology. Players race on tracks with no physical obstacles but instead, navigate through virtual worlds projected onto the floor of the arena. Using state-of-the-art projectors mounted on the ceiling, BattleKart creates interactive circuits and game modes that come to life as players drive.

BattleKart features six exciting game modes, including the BattleRace mode, where drivers compete in high-speed karting duels. Other modes, such as BattleFoot, BattleVirus, and BattleSnake, offer unique twists and challenges, ensuring that every game is a new experience.

Each kart is equipped with sensors and on-board electronics that allow it to interact with the virtual elements of the track and with other karts. Players can pick up bonus squares on the track, triggering power-ups like a rocket boost, which can be activated by pressing a button on the dashboard. If the rocket hits an opponent, it slows them down temporarily, allowing players to overtake in a competitive race for the finish line.

"Seeing our guests' reactions has been absolutely amazing over the past three months," said Liam Caffrey, Director of BattleKart Gateshead. "Our interactive gameplay makes every race an exciting and unique experience. Whether it’s racing through different virtual worlds, using power-ups, or outsmarting opponents, there’s a new thrill at every turn. We're proud to provide something for everyone, from families looking for a fun day out to corporate groups seeking a team-building adventure."

BattleKart Gateshead is open to anyone from 1.45m tall, making it accessible to a wide range of ages and abilities. The venue has quickly built a loyal following, with many visitors returning to experience even more thrilling races. With its flexibility to accommodate group bookings, birthday parties, and corporate events, it’s becoming a go-to destination for celebrations and team-building activities.

"The first three months have exceeded our expectations," continued Liam Caffrey. "We’ve had fantastic feedback, and the excitement is growing. We’re already planning some exciting new features and events to keep things fresh for our visitors."
