The May Day Brigade (running from 27 April to 10 May 2025) is organised by the Cuba Solidarity Campaign (CSC) and offers trade unionists a unique opportunity to engage in practical solidarity work. During the trip, delegates will attend the May Day Rally in Havana’s Plaza de la Revolución, take part in an International Solidarity Conference, and meet with Cuban workers, trade unionists, and local communities to understand the challenges they face.
With Cuba’s access to basic supplies restricted for over 60 years, participants are strongly encouraged to bring material aid with them. Stuart has organised a fundraising campaign within Thompsons to collect medical and educational supplies, alongside raising funds for CSC’s wider "Cuba Vive" medical campaign.
Thompsons has worked extensively with the trade union movement and the CSC for many years to end the US blockade and support Cuba’s right to self determination without foreign interference.
Despite the blockade, Cuba has established a model health service and education system, and is an inspiration in the way it protects its public sector. Thompsons’ staff have joined many CSC delegations to Cuba and fundraising activities in support of the Cuban people.
Speaking about the initiative, Stuart said: "I’m honoured to represent Thompsons in this important act of international solidarity. The blockade makes access to essential medical and educational materials difficult for Cuban communities, and I want to do what I can to help. Thanks to the generosity of my colleagues, I’ll be taking over a suitcase filled with supplies, and I hope to raise enough funds to make an additional donation to Cuba Vive."
A spokesperson from the CSC noted: “Cuba is facing its most severe economic crisis in decades. With unprecedented shortages of basic goods, in particular in the health sector, and a second Trump administration to contend with, international solidarity is more important than ever.
"Stuart will see first hand the many achievements of Cuban society over the past 65 years while on the May Day Brigade. But he will also see the devastating impact of the US blockade on the Cuban people and why practical solidarity like this is so important.
"Thanks to Stuart for organising this fundraising effort and thanks to Thompsons for their ongoing support and solidarity.”
Thompsons has a long-standing commitment to international solidarity campaigns and has supported the May Day Brigade for several years. The firm continues to stand alongside trade unionists in their fight for fairness and justice—both in the UK and globally.
